Introduce Yourself

Hello all,
Started play UO in 97 on Yamato Server on dial up from Australia with 800ms ping - PVP was never an option, but I always did enjoy PVM. I ran my own Shards for a while using RunUO but never had the time to fully devote. In the last few months my You Tube feed has been littered with UO feeds from UO Outlands, and the unique stuff on your shard has made me curious enough to give UO another shot. I still dont know about aspects and chains and stuff...yet.

First Day yesterday - and here is how it went.

Download and setup an absolute breeze. NP there. Great Job.

Whilst downloading - I checked out some of the templates.
I wanted a no brainer character. Lets make a Dexxer.
  • Chivalry
  • Fencing
  • Tactics
  • Healing
  • Anatomy
  • Arms lore
  • Resist
Character creation was just as i remembered - but once in game it took me a few seconds to remember how to walk.

Training Scroll - Oh great You give me 10K to spend on training. Unfortunately - It didnt work very well. I got one skill trained...and then on the second skill the vendor walked off mid transaction and the whole deed poofed into thin air. Oh well. All good.
Spent a few hours in the Dungeon and got all my desired skills to 80 and the UI sort of working reasonable. Havent set up any macro's - and couldnt get bandageself macro working - but i didnt try too hard.

So..here we are 80 skill and shitty equipment. Where to from here?

If this was a normal shard - I'd start off with some easy place such as Cove or go into Shame.

Are there any "Easy" wilderness areas to hunt and skillup? I dont want to just afk hit a training dummy until i'm 100.
And I dont want to go into Dungeons full of PKers just yet.

I would recommend testing out the sanctuary dungeon. The "Sanctuary" buff (cannot commit criminal actions) rotates weekly and every Friday evening it resets. Check the Outlands Map at Prevalia Bank to see which dungeon currently has the "Sanctuary" buff. It's a good opportunity to experience a dungeon and learn the layouts without fear of PvP. Keep in mind that the downside to this buff is that all loot is cut in half. So, you don't want to spend more time in there than you have to. Ideally you want to get out in the normal dungeons (for full loot) once you feel comfortable enough to farm level 2s.

Good luck!

Hey all, just started today. Finished up the newbie dungeon and went out to try to find the sanctuary dungeon. Got PKed within 30 seconds and the nerds took all my newbie stuff and killed my horse. So I guess that's it for me lol. Gonna try UOF

We hope you find a shard you enjoy! Even UOF.

So you got killed by PKs in a game that has PKs???

That's like complaining about getting hit by specials in Mario Kart..... What exactly were you expecting here?

Hi Everyone,

Bond here. Played on Europa as a member of Evil Llama Riders (ELR) from when T2A was launched until about 2006 when PVP became unbearable on the shard with the Apple Zerg.

Looking forward to getting back into it, no other game has been close to the allure UO had back in the day!

Welcome aboard! Enjoy your newbie days, they're the best. No need to rush through content!

My Birthday today so I thought Id share the journey so far:
24 Links
67 Million Gold Earned.
T15 Holy,
T15 Shadow,
T14.5 Frost,
T6 War
T0 Harvest

3 Echoes - Holy Paladin, Shadow Backstabber, Picker

I started slow - No Guild to help. I started playing Holy because, Holy was 7K a core and I didn't have any benefactors.
I stayed mainly in Sanctuary dungeons. and Close to Prev Cemetery because I suck at pvp.
I would do a 3K run and then run back to the bank to drop off.

Over time. It got easier.
I got my Codex's, and a rune Book and got it blessed.
I learnt every Dungeon while they were sanctuary. A Huge Help.

Then someone put me onto the Guild New! I was 37 days old when I joined New, and I started to do more.
Main Bosses, Mini Bosses and Omni Bosses, T-Maps and Dungeon runs as a group.

5:00am starts because I'm an Aussie and New is predominantly US time zone.

Without a doubt- New has some the very best players that you are ever likely to meet, and allied with some other great guilds too.
I am thankful to have found a home in New!

I used my Achievement points to get a Polar Bear Mount.
I used my Society points to get my Strong Box's
I just focus on PVM. I don't Mine/Lumberjack, but I did buy enough Ingots to level up a Blacksmith so I can make my own Armor.

There is a lot of content I still haven't done. I haven't explored even 10% of the Wilderness.
I have explored Undermountain, and I absolutely love the progressive spawns. I hope we see more of these. The Driders are especially cool and I'd love to fight them all day. Not just during the progressive spawn. The Progressive spawn cycle is actually more fun than the boss.

- On Reds:
I'm not going to complain about the number of reds. I understand its part of the game - but I am going to complain about the Imbalances.
I got a Book of Grudges for Xmas. There are 7 Pages of Deaths (approx. 105 Deaths in 8 Months) at the hands of Reds.

Why do we have absolutely one sided pvp when you are running Chivalry and Full plate?

It makes me avoid most places where reds will find you.

Yet the Reds will find you no matter where you are, with their Void aspect Armor and their DR links, they ignore everything and can just kill you with Mobs or with Explosion spell that just ignores common sense with its modifiers vs Plate.

My biggest wish is that when a Red comes at me, and I am in T15 Holy with 185 AR that I can last a round or two. Armor should count for something in pvp. And I shouldn't be pvp flagged if some red attacks me, and any Blue that heals a red should also get a kill count. I don't want it to be one-sided. I want to have a chance.

-On Time:
In the last few months, I have gravitated towards Time. It really is the Ultimate PVM experience that I have seen on any shard in the UO Universe.
I appreciate the work that has gone into the development of time. /BOW The new Quests are a great addition, and I'm sure we will see these propagate to other dungeons soon. I'm not sure the increased difficulty I've noticed was really necessary, but if you want to make it "Group only content" you have done a good job.

-On Boating:
I haven't been able to do boating yet. I have watched some people stream boating and the mechanics look really really great. I hope you can find a way to make it accessible to all.

-On Factions:
Factions are great. except I think it needs to be one faction per outlands ID because its easy to exploit.
Id love to see this expanded, and make it pvm as well as pvp. Perhaps waves of Evil Factioners attack the VIP and we have to protect him.
Faction Flags that can be located at other areas such as guild Houses, or monster lairs. Raiding a Guild House, Or Corpse Creek for a Faction flag sounds like Fun.

Wow, that is some top-tier progress. You'e averaging over 17m a season.... and that includes your newbie days! You're also averaging 1 death about every 640k farmed, again including your newbie days, that is a hell of a ratio. If anything we need more PKs based on those stats.

But, I do agree with you regarding some balance issues dexers face. Here on Outlands dexers are in as good of a spot as they've ever been in all of UO. But, there are some lingering imbalances dexers still have to deal with because Magery is 'utility' and only mages deserve 'utility' for some reason:
  • Chiv Gate Travel - In order to maximize the chivalry benefts we have to recall to the front of a dungeon and run the entirely of level 1 instead of recalling in to the deepest gate as mages do. If we want to use our Chiv Gate we have to constantly recall in, mark the chiv custom spot, cast chiv gate (hoping we're not targeted by a mob), and then travel through to a spot we are already standing on...
  • Rope/Teleport - Mages have access to both. Dexers do not. Because magery is 'utility'? Rope should be dex based.
  • Armor & Mindblast - Dexers have three options here: 1) nerf their capabilities by PvMing with low armor in a dungeon, 2) open themselves up to Mindblast by wearing full plate or 3) carry an extra couple pieces of armor to macro an armor swap. Mages don't have to make this choice - 1 suit of leather armor that is already balanced for PvP and suffers no penalties in PvM.... must be nice!

Hello, I've been playing Outlands casually for over 4 years. I'm still at 20 links, plenty of breaks in between when I get busy IRL.
Used to play Great Lakes back in the days of Lord Blackthorn's Revenge.
Anyways, love the server and all the hard work that goes into it. Any new players, if you see me around, feel free to ask for help or guidance.

Wow,
@Szazor,

I just finished reading your post about your journey through the Outlands server, and it was a fantastic read, laying out your path step by step.

Hey guys. i haven't played UO since 2003 or so. but i loved it when i was in my early 20s. im now 43.. and coming back to the game i find i love it just as much as i used too.. i hope i can make friends with many of you, and maybe Enemies with some of you! haha regardless i hope you're all doing well in life!

I'm Seas. I did the "fashionable characters" screenies on well-dressed clothed chars in the nullties. I started playing around 2001-2002. I stopped playing UO and actually all computer games 2005, because I met Bella. Now the kids are adult and can take care of themselves, and I'm retired. Originally I couldn't play any online games because the free WIFI I used blocked gaming ports. Then I looked up html5 games and also javascript games, but eventually got tired of them. Tired, maybe? A guy called me a "bot" on a new game I played that I actually liked, that I had "multiple accounts", eventhough I was lvl 15, most others are 60 even over 100. Laughable. But then I remembered, Ultima Online? I had heard of free shards back in the days, and the one that popped up first on a google search was Outlands.

After quitting computers for 2½ weeks as an early new years promise, for this year, I sort of got tired of the plain ordinary life. It was fun and nourishing, but I'm a gamer at heart. One of my first memories is related to very primitive MUDs on mainframes.

Anyway, the hiatus made me re-think why I play computer games. So I'm refurbishing all my chars to be without mounts, not focusing on loot or items, and using more rp-friendly skills instead of max damage. Yesterday I tamed 5 eagles, and wouldn't you know, a PK tried killing me, succeeded, but then fled into the wilderness because my birds were gnawing him to bits!

That's what the "RPG" in MMORPG stands for. The MMO stands for "co-operation", so many people play online games almost all single-player. I used to do that in the nullties as well, barely got a friend to PVM with over severel years, but I was so shy back then. When I finally tried Felucca and got to share in a house, I got a Poison Wall on me and freaked out. I tried a year later and got combo-killed in a second. I cried so hard, mentioning on the forum, that the PK felt bad and gave me back my items, lol.

Anyway, the game isn't perfect, but what is. I'm an artist, musician and poet, among other things. So I get balancing ideas constantly. Lately I've thought about making an own shard just on my laptop and editing it however I like. I did that with diablo II when Blizzard eased the modding experience after awhile.

Hello! I’m honestly surprised to find that there’s still an active free server running. I was an active player around 2005–2007, but I don’t even remember which server I used to play on. I did RP as an orc back then… but I’m realizing the orcish folks here use a totally different dialect and grammar ;D

I’m really curious to see how interactions will go with the roleplayers here. I’ll definitely try to learn their version of the language, but I also feel like there’s some fun in playing a kind of dumb, detached cousin with an old, isolated dialect—basically speaking broken orcish.

I'm not sure what character name(s) I'll use but I intend to install and log on when I get back from this work trip.

I played after the Felucca/Trammel split on Sonoma, with a smattering of time in Siege Perilous.

I hope to make myself essentially self sufficient, find a little home, and seek out a welcoming a friendly community with which to adventure.

I may try to show this to my son as well, to hopefully lure him away from the more brain rot driven Fortnite.

I'll look on the guild pages and try to find a large guild and home for us.
