The system having the player earn points by using different Pets has them forced onto the player, rather than being chosen. Players enjoy certain Pets, and as such, do not enjoy others.
As another 'bandage' attempting to solve the problem of (the majority of) Pets being unattractive, this one is dirty.
I can say that the changes made in the Taming Overhaul looked like an improvement. I noticed an standardization, which contributed to balance. But there's a limit to how much something's flaws can be fixed.
Now, for those that can't resist the power increase that'll be granted by the system, using the unwanted Pets will be another chore (such as leveling them), rather than a pleasure.
