The pets I like, sorted by taming required

super hamsters

Neophyte
I see people getting paralyzed by the number of pets available to new tamers, so I figured I'd list all my favorite pets and why i like them. if i missed something, comment below.

Taming required: <=80
grizzly bear, polar bear, black bear, cave bear, brown bear - the enrage minaj is very strong, but their accuracy is meh.
forest ostard, desert ostard - two potential members of frenzy minaj
fire salamander and flamehound - frenzy+flamestrike are GREAT abilities. unfortunately, their accuracy is a bit low, so they won't be especially useful past lvl 2 of dungeons.
winter wolf - frenzy+chill has so much potential, but it's accuracy is meh.
searing imp - this is one of the 3x spellburn 1 slotters that are MVP at bosses. everybody should have one.
drake whelp - dragon breath is a very strong cooldown ability, so this is a great candidate for mutation minaj
searing mantis - very powerful pet with decent accuracy and 2x great proc abilities! i keep 2 of them!
firebat: it's a 1-slot searing mantis. good choice for immolate minaj.
jaguar - backstab minaj candidate. its accuracy is meh.
a primordial whelp: a good choice for frenzy minaj

taming required: 85
Sabeartooth - chill on demand can be very powerful. pair it with 3 control slots of high damage attack spec pets.
blood ape - frenzy+bleed is very powerful, but it has low wrestling, so it's outclassed by bloodhunters which is available at 115, but it's reasonable to keep 1 for a minaj team.
tundra ostard - a potential member of frenzy minaj
dragon whelp - a good candidate for mutation minaj

taming required: 90
fire minion - this is one of the 3x spellburn 1 slotters that are MVP at bosses. everybody should have one.
vampire bat - it's damage is mediocre, but it's attack spec and heals itself
giant poison dart frog - great accuracy, lethal poison and a regen ability makes this a decent beast sting pet

taming required: 95
molten mongbat - flamestrike is very powerful, and the molten mongbat has surprisingly decent accuracy. this is an auto-include in immolate minaj
frenzied ostard - auto-include in frenzy minaj
giant trapdoor spider - this used to be a very popular pet, but isn't meta per se. it does well and is worth trying out.

taming required: 100
devourer beetle - this is the 2 slot version of a meta tank pet: the gravebug. IMHO, this is the best tank pre-110 when sphinx become available.
arctic bullvore - immediately applies a lot of chill, and can max it out after 15 seconds when his cooldown goes off a 2nd time. he's also a pack animal. this is a very good pet comparable to the searing bullvore.
snowdrift - long ranged chill on demand and benefits from swoop. it's not a bad option early on, but probably wont be in your teams when you're established.
black widow - one of the highest dps per control slots utility pets. disease+hinder on a poison pet is very powerful.
fire crawler - if you want to try out the Behemoth talent in the tanking spec, this is an excellent choice.
komodo - a crush(pierce/hinder) pet that synergizes with fencing tamers nicely.
nightmare - 2 slot spellburn pet. spellburn is very powerful and running 2 of these and a searing imp/fire minion is enough to carry yourself at bosses.
wisp - spellsurge is pretty good, but i prefer immolate pets like nightmares.
skeletal dragon - this and the basic wisp are the iconic starter pets at GM. they're decent up to this point, but you won't use them at 120. this pet performs a lot better with high mutation.
water drake: cripple on demand, decent damage
ruby smallshell: one of the best 1 slotters to pair with warpigs
aqua smallshell: one of the best 1 slotters to pair with any melee pet with low accuracy

taming required: 105
acarid: burrow is the strongest pet ability, but doesnt go off very often.
arboreal wisp: better than the plain wisp. popular with boaters!
swamp drake: used to be popular with archers for it's ranged, on-demand hinder. it does decent damage because it touches a lot of talents on the utility tree, but not as much as black widows.
ankheg: one of the rare pets that has aoe/garaunteed poison. tons of potential, but isn't especially strong right now.
ember drake: probably the strongest drake, up near smoke drake
aegis whelp: a decent choice for frenzy minaj
wyvern: lethal poison, high accuracy - decent beast sting pet, not as good as black widows
manticore: HUGE cooldown ability - probably the strongest/most popular pet in the 105 category

taming required: 110
warpig: this is currently the highest dps farming pet in most circumstances. get 2.
cryptwing: frenzy+burrow. warpigs closest competitor for top dps. in some situations, it beats pigs, but not most. get 5.
sphinx: the first tanky 1-slot tank. it's a slightly worse version of the lemura.
aegis leech: it has burrow, which is excellent.
blood courser: it's pretty much a worse nightmare, but it's popular for boating.
cave gorger: strong hinder/poison themed 3 slotter, frequently paired with swamp drake
white wyrmling: conical, on-demand chill. its pretty good.
giant black widow: hinder+poison+disease touches a lot of powerful talents in the utility bestiary.
bonfire wisp: the strongest spellburn pet before you get a phoenix. everyone should have one.
azure/sun wyrmling/giant strider: very strong mutation pets
smoke drake: excellent backstab/aoe pet
water dragon: cripple on demand, has some utility paired with pets that need to land more hits
oozing naughtilus: SO MUCH potential--easy include for mutation minaj
boreal faerie wyrm: very popular to pair with warpigs

taming required: 115
blood hunter: often compared to cryptwings. its perfectly reasonable to run 5 of them, or have one as a member of frenzy minaj.
goretusk: surprisingly powerful pack animal
savage primordial: it has a very interesting ability, but it has a cooldown, a short duration, and resets the swing timer. its fun to try.
earth dragon: one of the few decent candidates for Behemoth talent
ember dragon: it's a visually appealing pet, but middling DPS.
sandmuck: multi-target, on demand pierce makes it a great pairing for warpigs, but it's teleport can get it in trouble.
fire mephit - this is the last of the 3x spellburn 1 slotters that are MVP at bosses. everybody should have one.
frost mephit: great option to pair with phoenix, if you're running command aspect. swap it for fire mephit or incubus if you're running frost aspect on your armor.
blood mephit: its a worse fire mephit, but boaters like them.
gravebug: a 1 slot tank that heals itself: it's been popular since it came out.
incubus: MR shredding, hindering one-slotter. it's great, especially if you've stacked a lot of follower speed%.

taming required: 120
<4 slotters:
bloodworm: burrow+bleed is very powerful. keep it above 66% hp, or itll heal itself and not burrow.
sun/azure wyrm: great mutation pet
white wyrm: can apply max chill quickly, but it's damage was balanced around that, so it's average.
searing bullvore: great pack animal, flamestrike is dope.
black cat: great frenzy 1 slotter, also has a crazy reflect ability. great for frenzy minaj.
smoke dragon: the strongest backstab pet. does a bit of AOE
smoke faerie dragon: same as above, but 1 slot
sinewseeker: strong backstabber, probably similar dps to shadow faerie wyrm
colossal crystal/swamp beetle: decent behemoth tanks
colossal pincer crab: decent behemoth tank
firey leaper: great candidate for immolate and mutation minaj!
boreal wyrm: its fine.
entozoon: it has great performance at bosses from its stronger disease proc and its ability to heal itself
harvestman: two of the strongest proc abilities, but burrow on a utility pet is a troll.
sword spider: it's aoe bleed proc has SO MUCH potential, but bleed on utility pets is a troll.

4 slotters:
phoenix: the king of ranged DPS
fortress beetle: damage sucks, but you dont need to heal them, generally. it's THE behemoth tank.
barbed prowler: popular for boating
colossoal trapdoor spider: stealth-tamer PKs used to use them to cause jump scares. their dps is OK.
colossal dung beetle: its a poop joke
otyugh/bogyugh: *groans* 😩

all of these are decent dps: colossal black widow, shadow prowler, darkscale, sunscale, colossal strider
