Housing Discussion

After listening to an Inside Outlands interview with Owyn, I want to say that having a painful/injured hand really sucks when you would use it so much to work on the world map. Without hearing that interview, I would have never known that and although it is a personal issue, it really informs the community that the world would possible grow but the pain needs to hopefully heal because there is no need to cause undo stress on a limb just to make space for a few more houses. So I hope you get well and I don't even care if it is "soon" as much as just getting well.

Admittedly there were some good points made and I guess it was a bit much to expect actual housing. Still though I think resources are getting tight. Lord help you if you need nightshade.

There are about 40 mage/alchemist vendors around, they respawn regs every 30-45 minutes, there's a potential of almost 2 million regs generated daily - there are going to be times you roll through and someone has just bought all the regs, because they are doing a major restock for a guild, but try again every 15 min, your sure to find plenty. As LS said, buy extra, so you have excess to get you through. But even Nightshade, I'll sometimes buy up 15-20k on a run. Helps to have access to every mage shop with a rune book though.

I lived out of the bank for my first year of UO. Nowhere to place and home prices were crazy high. Lack of available housing isn't unique to Outlands...its just the sign of a healthy shard. NOOOGRAHHH!!!

The inn room system is pretty brilliant and though I don't 'need' a house, I can't help but be disappointed that I can't use one of the nicely designed custom homes I saw when browsing the wiki. My brother and I were initially excited to see so many custom houses, planning which one we may be able to work toward, only to realize we'd need to farm over 2million gold just to buy a wagon placed in the middle of nowhere. I didn't expect to be able to place anything large, but the current situation feels a bit extreme.

I do get the sentiments related to the shard population, real estate economy, and how challenging it should be to purchase homes. However, on a shard that has done well at innovating and reworking a lot of archaic UO systems, it would be nice to see some additional creativity when it comes to land area to place homes (beyond what has already been done). As someone just now finding the time in my life to enjoy what this shard has to offer, I am already overwhelmed looking at the giant mountain of gold grinds between SS, aspects, chain links, and other necessities before even considering a house. Losing the entire aspect of having my own home that I can organize my loot and decorate with rare finds is pretty unfortunate. I don't see the appeal in a small number of rich players controlling the real estate market on the shard, but I understand this is more or less always the case in UO.

Nice man. And I've played since '97 and been a newbie, but have also owned castles, keeps, gate houses worth insane amounts. This game is better played and more enjoyable with a place to call home. I find the healthy shard argument a bit weak and lazy, but it is an easy one for sure. :) Prime and large real estate should definitely be valuable, though.

A small group of people do not control the housing market. It's just everyone wants a house and they aren't cheap.

But, I hear you man! For anyone starting on this server there is a mountain of different tasks and investments before you. Hell, if you just want to PvP you just have to find a way to grind up 200k to afford GM Magery and purchase your spellbook then you literally never have to farm another piece of gold. HOWEVER, if you want a house, a rare l33t outfit and a fully developed PvM character then you have A LOT to invest and work on. As UO has always been, it's whatever the hell you want to do

Whether you want a house
or a rare outfit (costs more than a permanent house)
or gold links for your mastery chain (costs more than permanent house)
or a legendary tamer (costs more than a permanent house)
or a legendary blacksmith (costs more than a permanent house)
..... and on and on......

You just have to pick and chose what is important to you and what you want to pursue. Expecting any of the above at the onset of joining this shard is unrealistic. Maybe housing is cheap on dead servers, but this is not a dead server. Luckily there are inn rooms available!!!

I remember you. Least your name. I have played straight from about 2000-2001. Every shard I played (except OSI Siege Perilous) seemed to have issues with housing. Either people wanted bigger or better homes (castles, keeps or near gates/cities) or they just wanted to place a spot. Everytime I hear about more housing I think of Malas and how spread out it seemed to make the population.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but I believe you are missing my point. Anyway, just my two cents as someone just getting going on here. I know most of you have been around for years and enjoy the things you have worked for being valuable, and I don't blame you. I will do as most everyone here is saying - shut up and use an inn room for the next year and pretend homes don't exist ;)

If you are the same dude I think you are. Won't take you long to get up to speed here and owning huts quickly.

I been on here for almost 2 months, I still dont got a house on here.
I don't mind it at all. I use the Inn system, and its alot better than nothing thats for sure.
Just some people think its possiable to log-on. Place house, and wham.

Took me 3 weeks just to get aspect as in earning it myself.

The new recall out of Inn is also grand.!
Been looking for a place but i dont want no wagon thats for sure. So ill just save till i can afford something thats better than a Inn :)

The no recall out of the inn was the one annoyance I had with it. The change in the recent patch was a nice surprise.

What happened to Owyns hand?
Can't leave me on a cliffhanger like that.

You can listen to the podcast on Spotify. Not a ton of info, but just mention that he hurt it and it didn't fully heal correctly due to constant clicking/developing Outlands map.

Probably not going to spur much discussion on this thread, but just want to add to my previous comments after listening to the podcast; it gave me some good insight into Owyn's thoughts on the subject. I hope my discouragement on the topic wasn't taken as any sort of negativity toward the shard. I'm confident based on the other unique design choices and innovations here that Luthius and Owyn can come up with something to help the situation.

I should maybe start another thread on the subject, but I definitely have some ideas regarding the new player experience after my last few weeks getting started here. I really like the idea of easier types of daily/weekly quests and perhaps some sort of character-bound chain link or other significant (aspect-related, SS, skill ball) items that a player could obtain that they must use on that character and wouldn't affect the shard's economy directly. Demand would go down very slightly if say you were able to earn 3 of 12 aspect cores through some newb-ish quests that guide a new player through the aspect system. Also as a newcomer, the chainlink system is very overwhelming, wondering how many hours I'd need to grind to get on the level of many (perhaps not?) players that have 10million gold+ in links. A one-time soulbound (usable by receiving player only) would go a long way to both introduce new players to the chain link system and also give them a small buff that would help in early character development/farming. Despite being a seasoned UO player, it is challenging to compete or feel any value even in my maxxed GM/120 character when comparing my damage with someone that has been around for years. I don't see it as being such a huge deterrent currently that would keep people from coming, but over time that power gap is going to grow more and more significant. With a system like I mentioned you could add a "free" soulbound link to the system to close that gap as needed, and also use the related quests as introductions to the unique systems of Outlands.

Hi there,
created a new account on outlands today and never played on outlands before. Was reading the feature lists before i started to play here:

"At roughly 50% of the size of the original UO map, player interactions should also happen more frequently – but don’t fret, we have nearly the same amount of room for housing as the original map.. And if we ever need more, creating new land is easy."

According to many forum posts and my personal experience so far the current situation is absolute horribe , especialy for newer players like me.

Are there any plans? I mean its possible to just add a landmass for very small houses (like placing rocks&trees so only small houses are fiting in) , so newer players like me could afford a cheap deed. Its okay if the bigger ones are rare and very expensive ( still pretty... unfair for newer players without 15millions of gold ^^. ).

Another idea:

New landmass with alot of rocks/trees so you can only place small houses.
New players , like me , who started to play today have a chance to get a small house for a fresh start.
veterans couldnt be mad because the big houses wont drop in value.

Yes, but in the meantime:

Have you considered renting an Inn? They provide you with everything you need.

I'm not sure why it's unfair for newer players, that established players have put in their time, and worked towards what they have. With that said, the inn system gives you all the luxuries of a home, with none of the drawbacks - sans one, which is you won't see people running around - for some that's actually a bonus.

It's a great, scalable system, that addresses the issues for new players perfectly, while you start your climb up mount Avadon. You should be focusing on the things that will grant you your nest egg, to be purchasing a home - and consider the home an end game goal, it should never be something you can achieve in the first couple weeks of your adventure, but certainly people are finding themselves into homes after 2-3 months on the server depending on their available playtime - which is definitely another factor being an MMO.

That's good insight. Honestly I've never thought about the physical demands that designing Outlands might take on your body. From hands, to back, to neck.

A new landmass would be ideal but that is a LOT of work, that can take months!

I propose a yet another idea: Expanded inn rooms.

Being able to recall from the inn room is a great change and makes the inn room much more functional. We can now have entire rune libraries, for example.

Would it be difficult to code expanding or doubling the room size for an extra cost? Such as a large is 10k per week, renting out an adjoining room of the same size is 150% extra, or 25k per week for both?

And you don't even have to connect them; upgrading can simply add teleporter tiles in both rooms and connect them. All you have to do is step on it to go back and forth.

This may be a nice solution while a new land mass is being built.

I think this housing problem is getting super out of control.
I stumbled across Outlands after my puppy ran away. I was crushed and felt I had nowhere to turn, but Outlands brought joy back into my life. I asked my cousin to join and he promptly made an account. We travelled the land in search of fame and fortune, while standing in the shadows of the most beautiful houses in the world. I virtually put an arm around my cousin's character and said, "some day Cletus, we will have a home as grand as this". We finally saved enough gold to get a nice big home, but there was nowhere to place it. Cletus wept as I screamed to the gods of how we newcomers are robbed of the same experiences that those who came before us bask in with their wealth and tracts of land. We felt defeated for sure. Add more land or we'll quit.
