GUIDE Treasure Map - Full Guide (How, What, Why?)

Mercury

Journeyman
First you need a map!

Next you need to decipher the map...for this you use Cartography skill & a Spyglass (a tinker crafted tool). As per most systems on Outlands, the tool material bumps the tool ability, in this case, a better tool allows the map to be deciphered more accurately. Here we used a Valorite spyglass on a Lv3 Map with GM Cartography.

After several uses. we ended up at 90% accuracy (max)

Time to find this badboy...the 3 skills related to Treasure Maps are Lockpicking/RemoveTrap/Mining. The 1st 2 are mandatory and skill level will allow you to open the chest, the 3rd isn't mandatory but increases the radius of the shovel you use finding the chest location. Very useful - Outlands has 1600! map locations...

We used this template for this lv3 map...

We then need to find the spot and then start using a shovel by double clicking it...be prepared!! Once you find the spot you will be hindered until the chest "pops" and once it "pops" so does wave 1 of mobs!

Once the spawn is dealt with, time to claim your bounty! Double clicking the chest brings up...

Looks good! Mind helping a new player (me) understand the character template you're using? Most makes sense, it's the spirit speak and inscription that I could use a hand with. Thanks!

Read up on the skill summary for information about how those skills affect his template. Inscription provides added damage to PvM when casting off scrolls. Additionally, with the use of Spirit Stones. Spirit Speak allows for longer lasting summons and increased damage when casting magery as well.

Good Luck

The template Mercury was using was just a standard PVM template, like Tucan Sam has indicated. Checking the skills guide found here - http://forums.uooutlands.com/index.php?threads/skills-summary-version-3-0.557/ will give you an excellent idea of how to build a character.

For Treasure Hunting, only Cartography (on any character), Lockpicking & Remove Trap (on chest opener) are the only mandatory skills. Mining is an additional benefit to digging up from a greater range, but not required.

The template posted doesn’t have cartography.. would that skill be on a separate character to decode the maps? Then hand them off to the other char to go dig it up?

Is there a msg that let's you know if you're digging near the chest? Or a way of knowing you aren't in the right spot?

If you're map is deciphered say 35% can you assume the pin is NOT the spot but close?

No, but having mining on the digger is a good way to search a large area quickly. I suggest getting some exceptional val tools for the added accuracy too.

So how do you know if you are anywhere close? Do I only need to try a spot once? Does dbl clicking the shovel cause an AOE search based on mining skill or is it only the square I am standing on (i.e. should I be walking around spamming dig or stay in one spot for several attempts?)

This is a great guide! Thank you for sharing this.
bborwoeorks I guess you search for treasure in a location and if you have more mining, the radius around you to discover the chest is bigger. The lower your mining, the closer you need to be of the chest to actually find it. At 0 mining you must be right on top of it to be able to dig it up. You should walk around and try different spots until you find the chest.

Yes just double click shovel and it will dig as long as you have a map in your pack. The higher the mining the larger the radius. @80 I seem to find chests about 5 tiles away, I think at gm you have an 8x8 radius (need GM to confirm formula).

There are 3 possible messages when you dig.
You fail to find anything
You dig up some some plant dirt
You dig something up <--Chest

Best thing to do is to start at the pin and work in a circle outward, marking the places you dug by dropping the dirt at your feet.
